History of Inverness

Inverness has had a tumultuous past and, due to its’ strategic location, it has seen many battles.

Perhaps because of its’ violent history little of the city’s heritage can be found with the majority of its architectural heritage dating from the 19th century.

Originally a Pictish settlement and home to King Bridei’s court from the 6th century, Inverness’ development was slow, but by the middle ages it was flourishing due to fishing, exports of wool, fur and skins. This led to ship building based there from the 13th century.

During the English occupation of Scotland supporters of Oliver Cromwell built a fortress by the river which later developed into the first Fort George by the Jacobites.

In 1746 the Jacobites were defeated at the Battle of Culloden near Inverness.

In 1822 the newly built Caledonian Canal linked Inverness to the West of Scotland.
